Ebook About
The elevator door opens. A cow stands inside, angled diagonally to fit. It doesn’t look uncomfortable, merely impatient. “It is for the housewarming ceremony on the third floor,” explains the woman who stands behind the cow, holding it loosely with a rope. She has the sheepish look of a person caught in a strange situation who is trying to act as normal as possible. She introduces herself as Sarala and smiles reassuringly. The door closes. I shake my head and suppress a grin. It is good to be back. When Shoba Narayan—who has just returned to India with her husband and two daughters after years in the United States—asks whether said cow might bless her apartment next, it is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between our author and Sarala, who also sells fresh milk right across the street from that thoroughly modern apartment building. The two women connect over not only cows but also family, food, and life. When Shoba agrees to buy Sarala a new cow, they set off looking for just the right heifer, and what was at first a simple economic transaction becomes something much deeper, though never without a hint of slapstick. The Milk Lady of Bangalore immerses us in the culture, customs, myths, religion, sights, and sounds of a city in which the twenty-first century and the ancient past coexist like nowhere else in the world. It’s a true story of bridging divides, of understanding other ways of looking at the world, and of human connections and animal connections, and it’s an irresistible adventure of two strong women and the animals they love.

Book The Milk Lady of Bangalore: An Unexpected Adventure Review :

Reading The Milk Lady of Bangalore by Shoba Narayan is like sitting down over a glass of milk while a good friend tells you an interesting and amusing tale of her life.Narayan grew up in India, was educated in the United States, and lived in the U.S. for many years before she and her family decided to return to Bangalore so their two daughters could experience the type of childhood they had lived. A modern apartment complex is their choice of home in Bangalore, while across the road is a military base where a woman named Sarala takes her cows each morning, selling her raw milk to any and all.At first, Narayan's interest in the milk lady is mild curiosity, then memories of drinking the raw milk and making yogurt pull her in, making her first a customer, and later a friend. Hearing the stories of their families, their shared love of food, and the vagaries of life made me smile, for we all want friends and community. When Narayan agrees to purchase a cow for Sarala, the road trips in search of just the right bovine is both heartwarming and humorous. I found the myriad beliefs about cows' special abilities, the power of cow urine and cow dung, and the celebrations that included the creatures quite enlightening. The descriptions of the homes, the countryside, the reverence for the cows, and the kindness of the people in the community made me desire a visit to the region. Now that I have been introduced to this book, I plan on looking for more of her writings. Though I don't remember where I heard about this book, I was so intrigued by it that I recommended it to our book club, and it was quite well received. I would love to meet Shoba Narayan and hear her talk about her writings sometime. I recommend this book to all, and I rate it a 4.5.
This memoir is a delight as it skillfully deals with the role of the cow in Indian culture and at the same time deals with the issues of friendship, caste, and income inequality that are pervasive in India today. But it is occasionally appalling, especially to a western mind, in its easy acceptance of raw milk, the drinking of cow urine as a medicine, and the use of cow dung as fuel and as floor and wall coverings in village homes. Since I grew up in rural North India, I was familiar with the uses of cow dung and the purchase of raw milk (which in the 1950s and 60s we boiled at home and had the luxury of thick fresh cream and butter which we churned ourselves). But I had a harder time with cow urine! Yet the author makes a reasonable case for its use but one that needs a fuller scientific assessment. But along with the developing friendship between the author and her milk lady, the best part of the book is the growing realization of the amazing personalities of cows. The book is superbly written, often poetic in its evocative descriptions of rural life in India. This is one book about sacred cows that should not be missed.
