I was surprised by this wonderful book. Before and after I walked the Camino de Santiago, I have read many books about this pilgrimage and this was one of the best. The author is brutally honest about himself and also gives wonderful descriptions of the Camino itself. Usually I don't recommend that people about to walk the Camino read a lot of books about it first, but I really think this one was special. Thank you Paul McGranaghan, for sharing your Camino. Camino books are written by and for people who have walked a Camino. Each story is unique. Paul's is the best of this genre, hands down. He captures the external experience with extraordinary descriptive language which shows how fully he was paying attention to what was around him. My journey on this same path a few months later was a blur, and he tells stories and interprets the landscape in ways I missed. Interspersed with the story of the landscape are his inner struggles, many of which I identify with. He pays attention as other people's lives join with his and move on, and as the local people experience the flow of pilgrims through their lives. The Camino changes every pilgrim; Paul can't exactly describe how it changed him, which some may find unsatisfying, but I find that makes him authentic. Reading this makes me want to know more about this Irish writer, who has very little of an internet footprint and hasn't completed his Amazon profile. As a writer myself, I read for more than story, and Ego Trip is simply brilliant.
